What Moving in Nairobi Is Actually Like.
Nairobi is a vertical city with horizontal traffic. Almost every problem on a city move comes from one of four things, and none of them are the boxes.
- One small service lift, and a booking sheet. Most high-rise blocks in Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Westlands have a single goods lift that has to be booked with the caretaker, often for a fixed window. We ask about it when you call, not when we arrive.
- Guarded gates and access permits. Gated estates and managed blocks want notice, ID and sometimes a written permit before a truck comes through. We send the crew and vehicle details ahead so the gate is not where your move stalls.
- Parking a truck on a narrow Kilimani street. Some roads simply will not take a big lorry, or there is nowhere to stand while we load. We look at the street, size the vehicle to it, and shuttle in a smaller van where we have to.
- CBD loading restrictions and traffic windows. In and around the CBD you load when you are allowed to load. We plan the run to fit the window rather than sitting in it.
And when the lift is down — which happens — it becomes a stair carry. We would rather bring enough crew for that possibility than discover it on the sixth floor with a wardrobe.

Yes. Tell us the floor and the lift situation when you call. If the caretaker gives you a fixed window we plan the whole move around it. If the lift is out on the day, it becomes a stair carry — and because we ask in advance, we bring enough crew for that to be a longer job rather than an impossible one.
You clear it with your management or caretaker, and we give you everything they will ask for — vehicle details, crew names and the time slot — before the day. Most guarded gates in Kilimani, Lavington and Kileleshwa just want it in writing beforehand.
It is a planning question, not a dealbreaker. Plenty of Kilimani and Westlands streets cannot take a big truck, so we size the vehicle to the road — sometimes a smaller van doing a short shuttle to where the lorry can stand is faster than forcing the lorry in.
